2/15/17 – Dr. Bill Mallon, Olympic Historian

The guest speaker for our upcoming meeting will be Bill Mallon, former professional golfer and a leading authority on the history of the Olympic Games, a subject on which he has written 24 books. He was a co-founder and later president of the International Society of Olympic Historians and was historical consultant to the organizing committees of both the Atlanta and Sydney Olympics. Mallon has also been a consultant statistician to the IOC and was awarded the Olympic Order in silver in 2001 for services to the Olympic movement.

Mallon studied at Duke University and graduated magna cum laude with an A.B. in math and physics. While at Duke he played collegiate golf and was a two-time All-American, twice voted to the Outstanding College Athletes of America and was a two-time participant in the NCAA tournament. He won over 40 amateur tournaments including two victories in both the Massachusetts and New England Amateur Championship and one Mid-Atlantic title.

Mallon turned professional in 1975 and joined the PGA Tour after qualifying at Q-school in the fall of 1975. He played four seasons, 1976–79, posting three top-10 finishes with a best finish of tied for 5th at the 1977 Joe Garagiola-Tucson Open. He played in the 1977 U.S. Open and was twice in the top 100 on the money list.

Mallon is an orthopedic surgeon in Durham and is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Duke Regional Hospital and Duke University Hospital. He received his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine and has been in practice for more than 20 years.

2/1/17 – Mike Fox, UNC, Head Baseball Coach

The guest speaker for our upcoming meeting will be Mike Fox, Head Baseball Coach at UNC. Now in his 19th season as head coach at the University of North Carolina, Mike Fox has guided his alma mater to the most successful period in school history and firmly established the Tar Heels as one of the nation’s preeminent college baseball programs. Capped by six trips to the College World Series since 2006, UNC has posted a 797-346-1 record in Fox’s 18 seasons in Chapel Hill.

Fox was a three-year letter winner at Carolina as a second baseman from 1976-78, helping lead the Tar Heels to the 1978 College World Series. As a senior, he hit .277, tied for the team lead with six home runs and was named to the College World Series all-tournament team. Fox also played on the Tar Heel junior varsity basketball team under Eddie Fogler in the 1975 and ‘76 seasons.

The native of Asheville, N.C., is a 1978 graduate of Carolina with a degree in physical education. He earned his Master of Arts in teaching at UNC in 1979. Fox served as a graduate assistant at Carolina during the 1979 season and was the head coach at Millbrook High School in Raleigh in 1980 and ‘81 before taking over as N.C. Wesleyan’s head coach in September of 1982.

The 1974 graduate of East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, N.C., played independent professional baseball for a year after graduating from Carolina before returning to his alma mater as a graduate assistant in 1979.

Fox and his wife, Cheryl, have a son, Matthew, and a daughter, Morgan.

Join us as we recognize two outstanding citizens who exemplify the traits of the “Hugo Germino Sports Ambassador Award“. The “Hugo Germino Sports Ambassador Award” was established to honor deserving citizens who have spent an exceptional amount of time promoting, coaching, and working with young people in various sporting activities in the Durham community, without recognition.  We feel these individuals deserve credit for taking their time and interest to promote athletics, fun, and happiness for so many people without expecting any pay or personal accolades.

gilmoreThe guest speaker for our upcoming meeting will be Gary Gilmore, Head Baseball Coach at Coastal Carolina University, the 2016 NCAA Men’s Baseball World Series Champions. Gilmore, who is entering his 22nd season at his alma mater, has seen the Coastal program continually rise in the world of college baseball to a national power and the 28th-year head coach ranks among the NCAA’s all-time top 50 in wins with almost 1100. Under his guidance Coastal has made 14 NCAA berths, twice advancing to a Super Regional prior to 2016, featured numerous draft picks – including 14 players drafted within the top 10 rounds over the last eight years, and built perhaps the best overall practice and playing facilities in the nation.

After leading Coastal Carolina to its first-ever trip to the 2016 College World Series, Gilmore was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association National Coach of the Year.

“Congratulations to Coach Gilmore on his first NCBWA National Coach of the Year award and getting his Chanticleers to Omaha,” NCBWA Executive Director Bo Carter said. “He has given so much time and energy to that program and for him to lead his team to the pinnacle of the sport is a testament to his loyalty and dedication.”

11/16/16 – Dan Brooks, Head Women’s Golf Coach, Duke

dan-brooksThe guest speaker for our upcoming meeting will be Dan Brooks, Head Women’s Golf Coach at Duke. In 32 years as the coach of the Devils, he has helped guide his squads to six NCAA National Championships, 18 ACC Championships and 125 team victories, which is the most of any women’s golf coach in Division I history.

Developing consistency has been a trademark for the Duke program, just as Brooks, a six-time National Coach of the Year, has his own trademark of being an excellent teacher of the game.  Looking to win their seventh title, the Blue Devils return four starters off last year’s squad, including 2015 National Player of the Year Leona Maguire and 2016 NCAA Individual Champion Virginia Elena Carta.

Over the last 18 years, Duke has established itself as the nation’s top women’s collegiate golf team with six national titles, 99 event titles, 13 ACC titles, four NCAA individual champions and 64 individual medalist honors.

roy-williamsThe guest speaker for our upcoming meeting will be Roy Williams, Head Men’s Basketball Coach at UNC. Williams is entering his 14th year as Head Coach. Williams is a member of the Naismith Basketball, College Basketball and North Carolina Sports Halls of Fame, leading Carolina to national championships in 2005 and 2009, four Final Fours, seven Elite Eights, five NCAA Tournament No. 1 seeds in 11 appearances, eight Associated Press Top 10 final rankings, seven ACC regular-season titles, three ACC Tournament crowns and six 30-win seasons. ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Sporting News and Fox Sports named Williams the Coach of the Decade for 2000-09 after he led Kansas and Carolina to 33 NCAA Tournament wins, eight more than any other coach.

Carolina’s win over Arkansas in 2015 was not only the 750th win in Roy Williams’ collegiate head coaching career, it also was his 65th victory in NCAA Tournament play, tying him with fellow Tar Heel Hall of Famer Dean Smith for the second-most all-time.

10/19/16 – Bryan Kersey, Dir. of Basketball Officials, ACC

kerseyThe guest speaker for our upcoming meeting will be Bryan Kersey, Director of Basketball Officials for the ACC. For the past 30 years, Kersey has served as an NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Official, and has been a regular in both the ACC and NCAA Tournaments. Overall, he has officiated in 20 NCAA Tournaments, including six Regionals, three Regional Finals and the 2015 NCAA Final Four. He has officiated 27 years in the ACC and has worked 21 ACC Tournaments, including seven championship games, and four NIT Finals.

“I am pleased to have Bryan step into this role as he brings a wealth of on court experience, superb knowledge surrounding all aspects of officiating the college game, and excellent professional business and management experiences,” said ACC Commissioner John Swofford.

“Bryan has demonstrated throughout his career a caring and respectful attitude towards college basketball and its communities,” said Paul Brazeau, ACC Senior Associate Commissioner for Men’s Basketball. “His long-time love for the game, and officiating in particular, remains evident. The ACC and all those affiliated with college basketball will be strengthened through Bryan’s stewardship and dedication.”

In addition to the ACC, Kersey has officiated in the Big East, Big 12, American, Atlantic 10 and Colonial Conferences. From Carrollton, Virginia, he is the president of Kersey, Sealey, Clark & Associates in Newport News, Virginia.

10/5/16 – Nolan Smith, Special Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach, Duke

nolan-smithThe guest speaker for our upcoming meeting will be Nolan Smith, Special Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Duke.  The former Duke All-American joined the Blue Devils’ men’s basketball staff on Feb. 22, 2016, and is in his first full season as special assistant. In this role, his duties include assisting the coaching staff in developing game strategies, breaking down game film, planning practices and contributing in staff meetings.

A consensus first-team All-American and the ACC Player of the Year in 2011, Smith helped lead Duke to three consecutive ACC championships (2009-11) and the 2010 NCAA title during his tenure as a student-athlete.

In helping lead Duke to its fourth national championship in 2010, Smith was named Most Outstanding Player at the NCAA South Regional in Houston and earned a place on the All-Final Four Team after averaging 16.0 points and 5.0 assists to help the Blue Devils cut down the nets in Indianapolis.

The Upper Marlboro, Md., native currently ranks 17th on Duke’s career scoring chart, having amassed 1,911 points from 2008-11. He played in 121 victories in a Duke uniform to rank fifth in program history and sixth in ACC history, and his 143 games played are tied for the seventh-most in Duke annals. Smith also served as a team captain for the 2010-11 season.

During his tenure as a student-athlete in the program, Duke went 65-2 (.970) at Cameron Indoor Stadium to set program records for both home wins and winning percentage in a four-year period

Following his graduation from Duke in 2011, Smith was selected by Portland with the 21st overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft.

9/21/16 – Joanne P McCallie, Head Women’s Hoops Coach, Duke

mccallieThe guest speaker for our upcoming meeting will be Joanne P. McCallie, Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Duke. The ACC Coach of the Year in 2010, 2012 and 2013, McCallie enters her ninth season at the helm of the Blue Devils’ program.

In just eight years, “Coach P” has guided the program to a 225-53 overall record, a 100-22 mark in ACC action and eight NCAA Tournament selections, including a No. 1 seed in 2009 and four straight Elite Eight appearances from 2010-13. She led Duke to four consecutive ACC regular season titles in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 and three ACC Championships in 2010, 2011 and 2013. Her 82.0 winning percentage in ACC contests ranks first on the conference’s all-time coaching charts, while her winning percentage of 80.9 in all games is first among active coaches in the ACC.
Prior to coming to Duke, McCallie spent seven years at Michigan State University. While piloting the Spartans to a nationally elite level, McCallie, the 2005 Associated Press Coach of the Year, guided the Spartans to their first ever NCAA Final Four and national championship game appearance as well as their first ever NCAA Elite Eight and repeat Sweet Sixteen appearances, the programs’ second Big Ten regular season title and first ever Big Ten Tournament Championship in 2005.

The former Joanne Palombo played her collegiate basketball at Northwestern from 1984-87. She still ranks seventh in Wildcat history with 378 career assists. McCallie graduated from Northwestern in 1987 with a degree in political science and earned a master’s degree in business administration from Auburn in 1990.

The McCallie family includes husband John, daughter Madeline (Maddie – 21) and son John Wyatt (Jack – 15). Maddie will be a junior on the women’s basketball team at Elon in 2015-16, after transferring from the Miami of Ohio.
